What is the role of aeronautical charts in ATC?

They provide airspace boundaries, navigation aids, procedures, frequencies, and obstacle data used for planning and clearance.

Aeronautical charts are the primary reference ATC uses to know what exists in the airspace and how traffic can legally move. They encode airspace boundaries, navigation aids, procedures (such as standard instrument departures, standard terminal arrival routes, and instrument approaches), frequencies, and obstacle data. This information lets controllers plan routes, assign altitudes and speeds, and issue clearances that keep aircraft safely separated and aligned with published procedures. They also support sequencing of arrivals and departures by showing the exact paths pilots will fly and the communication and navigation cues they will use. Weather forecasts, airline schedules, and pilot licenses are separate products or documents and aren’t part of aeronautical charts.
